Updated on August 2, 2013

Shopping For The Best Bags For The School Year

In preparation for a new school year, buying a new cool backpack is usually high up on the to-do list. At least that was always that way that it was when I was younger, and even now that I am an adult and no longer one of the kids in the house.

As you may already be know, such a new school bag can be purchased from a variety of different vendors, both online and offline, which leaves with a lot of choices for something that should be very, very simple to begin with.

Often the best deals for all types of these packs can be found when you do your shopping on the web.

When shopping for a new bag for school, you will find a wide variety of styles, colors and brands to choose from, which can quickly overwhelm you if you do not go into the shopping with a bit of a plan. Some of the most popular choices that you will come across are going to be the line of JanSport backpacks, which is actually one of the top brands for several years running now.

Keep reading to learn more about doing your shopping for a book bag for back to school.

JanSport Backpacks

JanSport is probably the most popular brand when it comes to college, school and kids backpacks. And for good reason - all JanSport bags have an amazing lifetime warranty! That means you never have to buy another one again because if it breaks or gets a rip in it somewhere, then you can get it completely replaced for free. That is correct - totally free. All you have to pay for is the shipping cost, which is less than the cost of getting a new bag at the store.

The most popular JanSport products are a tie between the Big Student Classic Series and the Wasabi.

This is the brand I have used for years and years, so I really cannot recommend them highly enough. The very best thing about JanSport backpacks for college is that awesome warranty - plus you get loads and loads of color and design options. I use the JanSport Wasabi myself, but there are tons of great models for you to choose from if that one is too small for you. It is a great choice for women or anyone who does not want something that is super bulky but still has room for a laptop computer.

North Face Backpacks

Another popular brand that you will come across when shopping for school and college is the North Face brand. The reason these packs are so cool is because they are super duper sturdy and can really take a beating from a lot of overuse. And many of them are large and loaded with compartments for all your books, gadgets and other accessories and gear. In fact, with the North Face Vault product, you can get two laptops and loads of books in the bag. The only thing that could make North Face products a little better for students would be if they had the lifelong JanSport warranty (but they do not, sadly).

One of my younger brothers swears by North Face when it comes to carrying his books around campus, and he is really rough on things like this. He takes his North Face out hiking with him in Chattanooga all the time (when he is not in classes) and it is still holding up great for him (which is surprising to me!). The thing that I don't love about these ones is they seem a little bulky to me, but that might be because I am a bit on the petite side. So, have a look for yourself.

DAKINE Backpacks

If you are looking for some super duper cool or trendy backpacks, then you have got to take a look at the DAKINE line of back to school products. They make a lot of awesome and super duper cute backpacks for girls and for guys (of all ages). Their men's line of products are really great. DAKINE bags do generally tend to run a little on the smaller side of things, but you do usually still have room for a laptop computer inside it. Color choices on this line of bags range from simple, solid colors to funky, cool designs.

Personally, I LOVE the look of these bags but they are just too darn small for me and all the things that I like to carry around at any given time. Especially since I like to be able to carry my laptop and a couple of books at the same time (not separately). The designs are some of the best of all the brands though, so I really wish one of these would work for me. Maybe if I trade in the computer for a tablet, I will be able to make one of these fit my needs.

High Sierra Backpacks

High Sierra bags are great looking options for both men and women. They are also fairly roomy in the compartments, which makes them great college packs. You can even use them as a travel bag (instead of hand luggage) or for hiking or even as a camping backpack. All these different uses are possible since these High Sierra products are pretty durable, regardless of use. High Sierra really does make great products to meet the needs of both girls and guys.

Honestly, I see a lot of similarities between these High Sierra options and the North Face ones. And they are great if you need a lot of room for all your books and gear. Not a ton of color or design options though, which is the only real downer for me. Click below to take a look for yourself.

I also want to note that the prices for this brand are usually some of the best out there (not counting JanSport products). You will find that this brand is very reasonably priced and can meet most budgets.

Laptop Backpacks

If you have a laptop or notebook computer to carry around, a laptop pack might be a great choice for you. It eliminates the need for a separate laptop bag. Plus, many regular packs come with a padded laptop compartment to keep your computer safe, even if you have the bag loaded down heavy textbooks in the main compartment. There is a lot of variety in this particular type of bag as well..

Remember, you will find this type of bag when checking out all of the brands above too. In fact, my JanSport has a laptop space. But, if you specifically want to narrow down your search to just something that can hold a laptop or notebook computer, then click the image below. You will get all of the brands that have the space for a laptop. This is the best way to not get your heart set on a particular product only to later discover that it does not have a space for your computer. You will also want to make sure that you are shopping by the computer screen size because the bags normally are designed to fit a specific size of laptop.

My School Bag History

You might be surprised to know that I started out using a JanSport bag in college that I originally bought all the way back in middle school! (actually I guess my mom bought it since I was just a tween at the time!) That is why JanSport is so popular with buyers all over the place because they are such good quality. After my freshmen year of college though, I had to upgrade to a larger option that could handle all of those heavy (and super thick) textbooks that I was carrying all over the school campus. However, I still own that middle school JanSport and sometimes use it as a small travel bag when I am taking short little overnight trips that do not require me to have a lot of space for gear or clothes.
